 Kicking Tips

Field Goals:

* Always remember to be exactly the same distance from the ball, no matter how far or what angle the kick will come from.  This means no matter how you line up for field goals...make it the same every time!

* Kicking is somewhat of an aggressive motion...do not "walk" to the ball!  Make it the same sort of feeling as if you were on a Sunday jog and happen to kick a pine cone off the street.

* What you do between point "A" (starting position) and point "B" (the ball) will determine the result of your follow-through (point "C").  It's not all about trying to follow-through after you kick the ball!

Kick-Offs:

* The farther you stand from the ball before a kick-off...the more room for possible error!  Make sure that you focus on consistent speed and steps during your approach on every kick-off.

* Every kicker will have an "ideal" speed at contact for that perfect kick!  Going too fast at contact will result in a breakdown in kicking form at the ball; often resulting in a miss-hit...going too slow at contact will result in a lazy kick with less distance.

* Stay in control during your approach!  Kickers have a tendency to attempt to "crush" the ball on kick-offs.  This aggressive mindset works only half the time!  There is no consistency with this type of approach.

Punting:

* The drop is one of the most important parts to the punt.  Practice, practice, practice a drop that is flat with the nose slightly turned inside.  The drop should be from directly in front of your kicking leg, not inside.  Act as if you were going to shake the hand of another person!

* Long steps do not always result in greater distance!  More often then not, short steps will allow for better "timing," which will ultimately result in punts with better hang time and distance.

* Your follow-through will be the result of the speed and length of your steps before the kick.  The ideal follow-through should be as high and straight (toward your target) as your body will allow.
